By train -
If time is not an issue, then travelling from Sophia to Bansko by train is a very beautiful and rewarding journey (it can take twice the amount of time than by car).  The scenery is magnificent and takes you through the highest train station in the Balkans.  There is four trains a day in each direction with the termini of the 125 km narrow gauge line being Septemvri and Dobrinishte. The journey from Plovdiv takes about 5.5 hours (9.90 LEV one way) and that from Sofia between 6 and 7 hours (9.50 LEV one way). In both cases there's plenty of time to grab some lunch (and a takeaway sandwich and beer for the ride) when changing trains at Septemvri which has a couple of really cheap kiosks.

For times and up-to-date fares click here www.bdz.com where you will find all the details.  Clicking on the train number gives the station stops and schedule.

By bus - Buses from Sofia to Bansko are of the same standard and quality as in the Uk.  Transfer time is roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours, depending on route and weather conditions.  A one way ticket is 16 LEV.   Bansko's bus station is located on the main Patriarh Evtimii road, about 5 minutes walk north of the centre, and is served by regular buses from Sofia and less regularly from Plovdiv.

Sofia Central Bus Terminal to Bansko (7 days) - 07.30, 08.30, 09.45, 14.00, 16.45

Getting Around Bansko

Bansko is not big so you do not see a lot of taxis.  Some hotels provide transportation to the gondola for their guests but traffic can get very congested near the gondola area.  If you stay in our apartment you need only to walk cross the street and you are there.

If you do need to use the services of a taxi, always ask the driver about the tariff to your final destination before beginning your journey.  There are taxi ranks at the bus station, gondola lift, Hotel Strazhite and Hotel Pirin.  Here are the details for both taxi companies in Bansko:
